Halcyon is privately held and controlled primarily by 16 partners, who average 14 years of experience at Halcyon and also own a majority stake in each of Halcyon's affiliates.  With a total staff of approximately 115, Halcyon Group currently has approximately 50 investment professionals.


John M. Bader
Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of Halcyon Asset Management

Mr. Bader has been portfolio manager for Halcyon’s multi-strategy funds since 1991, after serving as Director of Research at Gruss & Co. He began his career on Wall Street with IFB Managing Partnership in 1985. Mr. Bader has been a frequent speaker at educational and industry forums on investing, including ones sponsored by NMS Management, Institutional Investor, The Borsa Italiana (Italian Stock Exchange), the World Presidents’ Organization, and Skybridge Capital (SALT). He has participated in the Barron’s Roundtable, and has been featured in the Financial Times, Pensions & Investments, and Bloomberg, among other publications. He has appeared on CNBC and Bloomberg TV. Mr. Bader is a member of the Board of Advisors for the Harvard Law School Forum on Corporate Governance and Financial Regulation, has served as a member of the Research Council of The Greenwich Roundtable, and has lectured at Columbia Business School. A recipient of numerous academic prizes, Mr. Bader received his A.B. from Harvard University, Class of 1984.

Kevah Konner
Vice-Chairman of Halcyon Asset Management

Mr. Konner joined Halcyon in 1996. Prior to joining Halcyon, Mr. Konner was Co-head of the proprietary Risk Arbitrage Department for Smith New Court Inc. (1992 to 1995). From 1985 to 1992, Mr. Konner was a senior analyst specializing in event-driven situations for two proprietary trading operations, at Gruss & Co. (1987 to 1992), and at Ladenburg Thalmann & Company (1985 to 1987). Mr. Konner’s professional career started in 1983 at Asiel & Company, where he traded for clients and for the firm’s account in Merger and Convertible Arbitrage and other situations. Mr. Konner received a M.B.A. from the Leonard N. Stern School of Business, New York University in 1989, and a B.S. from the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce, University of Pennsylvania in 1983. Mr. Konner serves on the Risk Management Committees of Halcyon and all of its affiliates.

Thomas P. Hirschfeld
Chief Operating Officer

Mr. Hirschfeld joined Halcyon as Chief Operating Officer in April 2005. He was previously Managing Director of J. & W. Seligman & Co., a $20 billion asset management firm, where he served both as Chief Operating Officer for Investments and as Head of Venture Capital. Earlier, Mr. Hirschfeld spent six years as a Partner at Patricof & Co. Ventures (now Apax Partners) and eight years in investment banking at Salomon Brothers (now Citigroup). Mr. Hirschfeld was founding Chairman of the Senior Executives Group within the Asset Managers Forum, an industry standards, education and advocacy group. He also served as Assistant to Mayor Rudolph Giuliani during the mayor’s first year in office, handling special projects and leading the city’s Economic Policy and Marketing Group. Finally, he is the author of three nonfiction books totaling over 1.5 million copies in print. In 1986, Mr. Hirschfeld received his graduate degree in Economics and Politics from Balliol College, Oxford University, on a Marshall Scholarship. He received his A.B. from Harvard College in 1984.

Joseph W. Hill
Managing Principal, Member of the Executive Committee

Mr. Hill joined Halcyon in November 2005. Prior to joining Halcyon, Mr. Hill built and ran Credit Suisse First Boston's global hedge fund capital raising team beginning in 2002 after having held various senior positions with several alternative capital managers. From 1977 to 1998, Mr. Hill worked for Morgan Stanley, where he led a team responsible for all capital raising in Latin America; ran fixed income capital markets, sales and trading for all of Canada; led a team responsible for all non-dollar transactions distributed in North America; and headed a group that created, underwrote and distributed structured products based on foreign currency or non-US yield curves. Mr. Hill received his M.B.A. from the University of Chicago in 1977 and his B.B.A. from the University of Texas in 1975.

Jason Dillow
Portfolio Manager for Halcyon Asset Management

Mr. Dillow joined Halcyon in January 2005. Prior to joining Halcyon, Mr. Dillow, who had worked at Goldman Sachs since 2001, was responsible for investments in the energy, power, industrial, and financial industries in the Special Situations Investing Group, a multi-billion dollar proprietary investing area within Goldman Sachs’ Fixed Income, Currency and Commodities Division. Mr. Dillow received an A.B. with Honors from Princeton University.

John Greene
Portfolio Manager, Liquidations/Litigations Separate Accounts

Mr. Greene joined Halcyon in March 2002. During his tenure at Halcyon, Mr. Greene has focused primarily on distressed asset investing. Prior to joining Halcyon, Mr. Greene was a distressed securities analyst for J.P. Morgan Chase, where he began his career in 1999, and where he published research on distressed and high yield securities, made proprietary trading recommendations, and worked with J.P. Morgan Chase's London-based European High Yield Research team. Mr. Greene received his B.A. from Franklin & Marshall College in 1999.

Todd Solomon
Portfolio Manager, Halcyon Liquid Strategies

Mr. Solomon joined Halcyon in 2004. During his tenure at Halcyon, Mr. Solomon has focused primarily on special situation and distressed asset investing. Prior to joining Halcyon, Mr. Solomon was a senior research analyst with Triage Capital Management, an event-driven hedge fund focused on special situation, distressed and capital structure arbitrage investing. Prior to Triage Capital Management, Mr. Solomon was an associate in the Global Communications Group at Salomon Smith Barney specializing in merger and acquisitions and corporate finance. Mr. Solomon received his M.B.A. from Columbia Business School in 1999 and his B.A. from Union College in 1994.

Lawrence M. Davidoff
Director of Research for Halcyon Management

Mr. Davidoff joined Halcyon in 1991 and is one of the Directors of Research. Prior to joining Halcyon, Mr. Davidoff was employed by M.J. Whitman & Co., an investment boutique specializing in distressed and value investing. Before becoming an investment professional, Mr. Davidoff was an independent software consultant involved in planning and implementing complex financial services applications for a number of clients, including Morgan Stanley and The First Boston Corporation. A recipient of numerous academic prizes, Mr. Davidoff received a B.A. from Boston University in 1980.

Joseph M. Genachowski
Director of Research for Halcyon Asset Management

Mr. Genachowski joined Halcyon in 1998 and is one of the Directors of Research. Prior to joining Halcyon, he was a Vice President and Senior Analyst in the proprietary Risk Arbitrage Department of Salomon Brothers, where he began his career in 1986. Mr. Genachowski received his M.B.A. in 1986 and B.A. in 1985, both from New York University.

Aaron Goldberg
Chief Financial Officer

Aaron Goldberg joined Halcyon as Chief Financial Officer in 2006 after serving as the Chief Financial Officer at BlueMountain Capital Management. From September 2002 to April 2005, Mr. Goldberg was the Director of Accounting and Operations at AQR Capital Management, and served as Chief Financial Officer at Reservoir Capital Group from October 2000 to September 2002. Mr. Goldberg began his career at Goldstein Golub Kessler, a leading accounting firm for the hedge fund industry, where he held positions of increasing responsibility (including partner) from July 1987 to October 2000. Mr. Goldberg received his B.Sc. in Accounting from Yeshiva University.

Harold Kofman
Managing Principal - Trading

Mr. Kofman joined Halcyon in 1991 with experience as a principal trader at Millennium Partners, Lafer Equity Investors, Reich & Co., Laterman & Co., and Hanover Square Securities. Mr. Kofman received his M.B.A. from The Lubin School of Business, Pace University in 1981 and a B.A. from Touro College in 1979.

Manish K. Mital
General Counsel

Mr. Mital joined Halcyon in January 2007. Prior to joining Halcyon, Mr. Mital was a Senior Counsel with the Division of Enforcement of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, focusing primarily on hedge fund malfeasance. Before his time at the SEC, Mr. Mital was a litigator with Williams & Connolly. Mr. Mital earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School, and his B.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  Mr. Mital teaches Hedge Fund Law and Regulation at Harvard Law School and has been a recurring faculty member of the ABA National Institute on Securities Fraud.  He also sits on the board of the Loan Syndications and Trading Association and the Advisory Board of the Harvard Institutional Investor Forum, and serves on the Development Committee of the Innocence Project.

Maureen Tobin Powers
Managing Principal - Trading

Mrs. Tobin Powers joined Halcyon in 1985. Prior to joining Halcyon, Mrs. Tobin Powers was employed by Dean Witter Reynolds in the International Trading Department and as a paralegal for the Dutchess County Attorney’s Office. Her education includes undergraduate studies at Marist College and Oxford University. Mrs. Tobin Powers received a B.A. from Marist College in 1984.

Timothy N. Wallach
Managing Principal

Mr. Wallach joined Halcyon in 2001. Prior to joining Halcyon, he was a partner at Baker Nye, L.P. (1993 to 2001), and an investment analyst at Albert B. Cohen Partners and Neuberger & Berman. Mr. Wallach’s legal experience includes serving as an associate at Coudert Brothers. Mr. Wallach received his J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1978, and a B.A. from Cambridge University in 1974.


Ross Smead
Global Chief Investment Officer and Manager

Mr. Smead joined Halcyon in May 2006. Mr. Smead has over 27 years of experience investing in portfolios of corporate credit instruments, notably bank loans. As Chief Investment Officer and Managing Principal of Halcyon Loan Management, Mr. Smead is responsible for building the bank loan business and managing the various investment vehicles including collateralized loan obligations (CLOs) and separately managed accounts. Prior to joining Halcyon, he was a Managing Director and Portfolio Manager at Prudential Investment Management, where he worked for over 21 years. As head of Prudential’s bank loan team from 1998 to 2006, he was responsible for over $3.5 billion of assets under management, through structured products and institutional accounts. Prior to joining the U.S. Bank Loan Desk, Mr. Smead worked in Private Fixed Income at Prudential Investment Management, where he held positions of increasing responsibility from 1985 to 1997. He received his M.B.A. from the University of Chicago and his B.B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin.

Brian Yorke
Global Portfolio Manager and Managing Principal

Mr. Yorke joined Halcyon in May 2006. He has over 14 years of experience in bank loan trading and investing in bank loans. Prior to Halcyon, from 2005 to 2006 he was Head of Syndicated Bank Loan Trading at Seix Advisors. From 2002 to 2005, he was a Bank Loan Trader and Assistant Portfolio Manager in Prudential Investment Management's Syndicated Bank Loan Group, where he specialized in CLO portfolio management and participated in the launch and management of nine CLO portfolios. From 2001 to 2002, Mr. Yorke was a Senior Investment Analyst in Prudential's Private Fixed Income division, where he was responsible for bank loan and private placement credit analysis. Mr. Yorke also participated in the launch of the Prudential’s Institutional Asset Management Fund from 2000 to 2001, when he worked as an analyst for Prudential Capital Partners, L.P. Mr. Yorke began his career as an analyst for the Credit and Portfolio Management Division of the Prudential Capital Group in 1999. Mr. Yorke received a B.S. in Management from the University of Scranton.

David Snyder
Managing Principal

Mr. Snyder is a Portfolio Manager of Halcyon Loan Management LLC. Immediately prior to joining Halcyon in 2010, Mr. Snyder had been President of IKB Capital Corporation since its inception in 2000, as well as senior Portfolio Manager for the Bacchus (U.S.) 2006-1 Ltd. CLO following its creation in 2006. Mr. Snyder graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard University in 1978 with a B.A. in History. He also holds a Masters in International Affairs from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies.

Rehan Virani
Managing Principal

Mr. Virani re-joined Halcyon in February 2012. Before re-joining Halcyon, from 2010 to 2012, Mr. Virani was Director of Business Development and Marketing at Citi Capital Advisors ("CCA") focusing on Bank Loan Strategies and Mortgage Strategies. From 2008 to 2010, Mr. Virani was a Portfolio Manager in the Mortgage Credit Opportunity Fund at Citi Capital Advisors. Prior to joining CCA in March 2008, Mr. Virani was a Portfolio Manager in a Halcyon affiliate where he focused on CLOs and Structured Products. Prior to joining Halcyon, Mr. Virani was a Vice President in the Global Securitization Group at Merrill Lynch where he structured several CLOs. Prior to Merrill lynch, he was an Associate in the CLO group at Morgan Stanley (UK) and an Analyst in the Structured Credit Group at Credit Suisse. Mr. Virani received a BA with Honors in Economics from Georgetown University and an International Diploma from L'Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris.

Launched in December 2005, Halcyon Asset-Backed Advisors LP invests in a full range of stressed and distressed asset-backed securities, including residential mortgages, commercial real estate, equipment leases, and related assets. The Asset-Backed Funds seek to achieve attractive absolute risk-adjusted returns through a combination of current cash income and capital gains while maintaining low correlation to the equity and corporate debt markets. The Asset-Backed Funds are managed by Joseph Wolnick, James Coppola, and Joseph Godley, who have worked together for over twelve years and have extensive operational and workout experience in the ABS market. The three portfolio managers have collaborated on several successful business ventures and have experience managing the complete life-cycle of asset-backed securities. This depth of experience, together with the broad network of sourcing relationships the portfolio managers have developed, distinguishes Messrs. Wolnick, Coppola, and Godley from other managers in the distressed asset-backed space.



Scott Craven
Portfolio Manager

Mr. Craven joined Halcyon in August 2011. Prior to joining Halcyon, Mr. Craven was a Portfolio Manager at Alpine Capital beginning in December 2008. Prior to this role, he joined Diamondback Capital as a Portfolio Manager in February 2008. From 2005 to 2008, Mr. Craven co-ran a portfolio with Mr. Roy Smith at Pequot Capital. From 2001 to 2004, Mr. Craven was a Partner and Portfolio Manager at Northsound Capital. From 1995 to 2001, he was a Senior Analyst and Portfolio Manager at Dietche & Field. Mr. Craven started his career at Goldman Sachs in 1992 as a Financial Analyst after receiving a B.A. in History from Yale University.

Roy Smith
Portfolio Manager

Mr. Smith joined Halcyon in August 2011. Prior to joining Halcyon, Mr. Smith was a Co-Research Team Leader at Friess Associates beginning in March 2008. From 2005 to 2008, Mr. Smith co-ran a portfolio with Mr. Craven at Pequot Capital. Prior to this role, he was a Managing Director in institutional equity sales for Wachovia Securities since 1999. Prior to that role, he was a Vice-President with Alex. Brown from 1995. Mr. Smith started his career with First Maryland Bancorp in 1990. He graduated with a B.S. in Finance and Marketing from Syracuse University.


James P. McGinnis, Jr.
Chief Investment Officer

Mr. McGinnis joined Halcyon in January 2013. Prior to Halcyon, Mr. McGinnis was a Managing Director at Harbinger Capital Partners beginning in 2008, with responsibility for the firm's energy and power investments; he also oversaw its pan-Asian investment portfolio in 2011 and 2012. From 2005 to 2008, Mr. McGinnis headed the energy private equity investment business of AIG Financial Products Corp. in Wilton, CT. Before joining AIG-FP, he was a Managing Director in the investment banking division of Morgan Stanley, covering the energy and power sectors from New York, Singapore and Australia for twelve years. From 1989 to 1993, Mr. McGinnis was an investment banker at Goldman, Sachs & Co. in the energy and power group, focused primarily on mergers and acquisitions. He received an A.B. from Harvard College in 1985 and in 1989 graduated from Harvard Business School with an M.B.A. He currently serves on the Board of the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions.


Rollo Wigan
Managing Principal

Mr. Wigan joined Halcyon in March 2011. Prior to joining Halcyon, Mr. Wigan was at MKP Capital from 2002 until September 2010, serving in various roles, including Managing Director from 2009 until his departure. At MKP, Mr. Wigan was responsible for client development focusing on Europe, the Middle East, and Australia. Mr. Wigan received a B.A. with Honors in Politics and European Studies from the University of the West of England in 2001.
